MEP design is the planning of a building's mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems: the air conditioning, power, lighting, water, drainage and fire protection that make a structure usable. Architects shape the building. MEP engineers make it work.
The three disciplines
- Mechanical: heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), plus fire fighting on many projects.
- Electrical: power distribution, lighting, earthing and low-current systems.
- Plumbing: water supply, drainage and pumping.
What an MEP engineer actually does
The work follows a sequence. Study the architectural drawings, calculate the loads, select equipment, size ducts, pipes and cables, then produce coordinated drawings a contractor can build from. On site, MEP engineers check installation against those drawings.
Software you will meet
Drafting is done in AutoCAD and, increasingly, in Revit MEP. Heat load is calculated in tools such as HAP, lighting in DIALux, and power systems in ETAP.
How to start in the UAE
A mechanical or electrical degree or diploma is the usual base. What employers test is whether you can calculate and draw. An MEP design course in Dubai that ends in a completed project gives you something to show at interview.

Frequently asked questions
Is MEP a good field for mechanical engineers?
It is one of the main routes for mechanical engineers in construction, because every building needs HVAC, plumbing and fire protection designed.
What is the difference between MEP design and MEP drafting?
Design is the calculation and selection work. Drafting is producing the drawings. Most junior roles need both.
Can a civil engineer move into MEP?
Some do, usually through plumbing, drainage and coordination roles, after structured training.
