An electrical design course teaches the calculations and drawings behind a building's power system: load schedules, cable and breaker sizing, lighting layouts, earthing and single line diagrams. It is the standard step for electrical engineers who want design or consultancy roles.
The core calculations
Design starts with the connected and demand load of every space. From there you size cables for current and voltage drop, select breakers that protect them, and build the distribution from final circuits back to the main panel.
Lighting and small power
Lighting levels are calculated in software such as DIALux evo, then laid out with switching and emergency lighting. Small power covers sockets and equipment connections.
Drawings and documents
You produce load schedules, single line diagrams, lighting and power layouts and earthing details. The electrical design and drafting course takes these through to a complete drawing set.
Local authority requirements
Every emirate's utility publishes regulations that designs must follow. Ask your trainer which regulations the course references, and always check the current edition for a live project.
Where to go next
ETAP for power system studies, switchgear for equipment knowledge, and electrical QA/QC for site roles. See all electrical engineering courses.
Frequently asked questions
Is electrical design different from electrical drafting?
Design is calculation and selection. Drafting is drawing. Design roles need both.
Which software do electrical designers use?
AutoCAD or Revit for drawings, DIALux for lighting and ETAP for system studies.
Can a diploma holder join an electrical design course?
Yes. An advisor will check your background and suggest the right starting level.
